When the enamel, or the outer layer of the tooth, wears down\nover time, it can expose microscopic tubules in the layer of dentine underneath.\nTeeth become sensitive when the cells within these tubules are stimulated. This\nresults in a sharp pain when exposed to hot or cold temperatures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cracks in the enamel can also cause tooth sensitivity. Teeth\ncan expand and contract due to extreme changes in temperature. Microscopic\ncracks can develop over time, so hot or cold sensation may enter the cracks in\nthe tooth and reach the nerve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is Tooth Sensitivity a Sign of an Emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Having sensitive teeth doesn\u2019t necessarily mean you should\nrun to your emergency dentist. However, if your teeth remain constantly\nsensitive for more than three or four days, it might be best to go ahead and\nschedule an appointment as soon as you can.
