If you’ve been told you need a dental crown, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that modern technology allows many crowns to be completed in just one visit. Known as same-day crowns, these restorations eliminate the need for multiple appointments and temporary crowns. But how long does the process actually take?

What is a Same-Day Crown?

A same-day crown is created using advanced digital technology, often referred to as CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing). Instead of sending impressions to an outside lab, your dentist designs and fabricates your crown right in the office during your appointment.

Total Time: Typically 1–2 Hours

In most cases, the entire process of getting a same-day crown takes about 1 to 2 hours from start to finish. The exact timing can vary depending on the complexity of your case and the tooth being treated.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect during your visit:

Step 1: Tooth Preparation (20–30 Minutes)

Your dentist will begin by numbing the area to ensure your comfort. Then, they will reshape the tooth to make room for the crown. If there is damage from tooth decay or a fracture, it will be removed during this step.

Step 2: Digital Scanning (10–15 Minutes)

Instead of messy impressions, a small handheld scanner is used to create a 3D image of your tooth. This digital model is highly accurate and allows for precise crown design.

Step 3: Crown Design (15–20 Minutes)

Using specialized software, your dentist designs your custom crown to match the shape, size, and color of your natural teeth. This step ensures a comfortable fit and natural appearance.

Step 4: Milling the Crown (20–30 Minutes)

Once the design is complete, the information is sent to an in-office milling machine. The machine carves your crown from a block of ceramic material. You may be able to relax while this happens.

Step 5: Placement and Final Adjustments (15–20 Minutes)

After the crown is ready, your dentist will check the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and permanently bond it to your tooth. The result is a strong, natural-looking restoration completed in a single visit.

Benefits of Same-Day Crowns

Same-day crowns save time and eliminate the need for temporary crowns, which can sometimes be uncomfortable or prone to falling off. You also avoid scheduling a second appointment, making the process more convenient.

With today’s dental technology, getting a crown no longer has to take weeks. In just a couple of hours, you can walk into your dentist’s office and leave with a fully restored tooth. Same-day crowns offer a quick, efficient solution, helping you get back to your routine with a healthy, confident smile.
