What is BOTOX®?
Believe it or not, BOTOX® is a carefully diluted and purified form of bacteria known as botulinum toxin. Despite its scary-sounding name, it’s been safely used for many cosmetic and medicinal purposes for decades.
When injected into specific facial muscles, BOTOX® temporarily relaxes them, releasing tension that causes lines and wrinkles. The result is smoother skin and a softer, more youthful appearance. The injection works quickly. In fact, most patients see full results within five to ten days, and its effects typically last three to six months.
Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX®?
Many adults can benefit from BOTOX® as a way to create a smoother, more youthful frame for their smile. Most candidates are over the age of 20 and want to soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions. BOTOX® can help improve:
- Crow’s feet at the corners of your eyes
- Lines between your eyebrows
- Horizontal lines on your forehead
- Smoker’s lines around your lips
- Lines at the corners of your mouth
During your consultation, Dr. Henkin will review your goals and medical history to see if BOTOX® is right for you.
The Benefits of BOTOX®
BOTOX® is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments—and for good reason. It offers:
- Fast Treatment: Most appointments take only 20–30 minutes.
- Natural-Looking Results: Softens lines without a “frozen” or plastic look.
- Non-Invasive Care: No surgery, stitches, or lengthy recovery times.
- Lasting Improvement: Results usually last three to six months.
- Cost-Effective Refresh: A more affordable way to rejuvenate your appearance compared to many other options.
Why See a Dentist for BOTOX®?
It may not be obvious at first, but a cosmetic dentist is an excellent provider for BOTOX®. Dentists spend years studying facial anatomy, balance, and symmetry, as well as mastering precise injection techniques for numbing and other treatments. This expertise translates to safe, predictable BOTOX® results every time.
Plus, you’ll also see our team twice a year for routine dental care, giving you convenient opportunities to touch up your treatment, so you always look your best. If you’re ready to experience the benefits of BOTOX®, call our office or schedule your consultation online.
BOTOX FAQs
Is BOTOX Safe?
BOTOX uses small doses of botulinum toxin that are well within FDA guidelines. It also has an extremely reliable safety record and rarely triggers side-effects. In fact, in the first 14 years after BOTOX was approved for use by the FDA, only 36 adverse events were reported, and in many of those cases, the effects were related to underlying medical conditions, not to BOTOX itself.
In sum, cosmetic applications of BOTOX are considered to be very safe, but it’s still important to consult with your dentist and be honest about your medical history. If BOTOX isn’t right for you, it’s better to avoid any risks and seek alternative solutions.
How Can I Prolong My BOTOX Injections?
Maintaining the results of your BOTOX injections comes down to good skincare habits. Keep these tips in mind – many of them will be beneficial regardless of whether you decide to proceed with treatment!
- Take proper precautions in sunny weather. Sun damage is bad for the health of your skin and can chemically break down your BOTOX.
- Avoid high-intensity workouts that raise your metabolic rate. This can make your body break down the BOTOX chemicals quicker.
- Manage stress and anxiety. Stress can make your muscles tense, counteracting the effects of BOTOX. For some, chronic stress can also increase acne or cause their skin to break out in hives.
- Moisturize – Your skin needs to stay hydrated just as much as you do! The right moisturizer can help your skin look plump and youthful. Formulas with collagen and hyaluronic acid in particular slow down the rate at which BOTOX breaks down.
- Avoid nicotine products. Smoking, vaping, and other similar habits create fine lines that BOTOX can’t fix, and can damage your skin cells.
Does BOTOX Make Acne Go Away?
BOTOX has been known to clear up acne in some cases. However, if your acne is frequent or chronic, it’s probably best to use BOTOX in combination with other solutions.
Researchers were able to link BOTOX injections’ effect on acne to reduced sebum production (which basically means it reduces the amount of natural oil produced by your skin). While this can be beneficial for some patients, sebum is only one of many factors that can cause acne. BOTOX is not as effective for cystic acne, for example.
What Happens If I Stop BOTOX Injections?
If you stop receiving BOTOX injections, your wrinkles will return – but they’ll actually develop more slowly than if you had not been using BOTOX. They also won’t “return with a vengeance” or anything like that and won’t be worse than if you had never started BOTOX in the first place.
In other words, you can safely take a break from BOTOX treatment without experiencing negative side-effects, and you’ll be able to start back up again just as easily. This flexibility is one reason why BOTOX in Springfield is such a popular anti-wrinkle solution!
