Dental Implant Inquisition: What Happens at My Consultation?

Dentist explaining dental implants to patient

Many experts consider dental implants to be the ideal method to replace missing teeth because of the unique advantages they provide. They’re the only restoration that functions as a standalone structure, thanks to the titanium rod that’s surgically inserted into your jawbone. This keeps your jaw healthy which preserves your remaining pearly whites and facial structure.

Before you can move forward with this treatment, you must have a consultation appointment with your dentist. If you’re unsure why, keep reading to learn about 4 things to expect from this visit.

#1: Oral Exam

If you have tooth decay or gum disease, it can negatively impact your dental implant because you need strong gums to anchor it in place. Plus, if harmful bacteria are present in your mouth, you’re at greater risk of infecting the surgical site. That means your dentist will examine your mouth for any areas of concern and work with you to address them before proceeding.

#2: Imaging

Did you know that tooth loss causes your jawbone to weaken? Your body begins to reabsorb bone mass that’s no longer necessary to support teeth. That means your dentist must first confirm whether you have the required bone density needed to support a dental implant. Different imaging techniques like X-rays and CT scans will be taken to get a full picture of what’s happening under the surface of your gums.

#3: Treatment Recommendations

Your dentist will suggest appropriate solutions based on their findings. If you have any oral issues, they’ll work with you to address those before continuing with dental implants. For example, they’ll fill in any cavities and work with you to clean up gum disease, first. For those with insufficient jawbone density, a bone graft may be able to sufficiently bulk it up. You’ll have to take some time to recover after this surgery before you can begin another.

#4: Questions and Answers

This visit is the perfect time for you to express any concerns and ask any questions you may have about the offered treatment plans. Your dentist wants you to feel confident about any decisions you make and is happy to walk you through the potential procedures. They can let you know how long it will take, whether you’ll be sedated, what the final results will be, and what to expect from recovery. Once you and your provider agree on the path forward, they’ll schedule the next steps in the process.

Now that you know more about what to expect, you can set your mind at ease about your upcoming dental implant consultation!
